If a cavity grows large enough, bacteria can start spreading through your pulp, where a tooth’s living tissues are housed. When this occurs, it is typically possible to treat the matter with a cavity. However, if a cavity spreads beyond your dentist’s reach, or if you have an infection form in a tooth’s roots, another treatment approach can be called for. Our practice relies on advanced imaging technology, including microscopes, which we can use to determine where treatment needs to occur to restore a tooth’s health. When necessary, we are prepared to offer more involved treatments, like oral surgery, to make sure that its health is restored.
Oral surgery enables us to perform treatment on portions of a tooth that are not accessible through a traditional root canal procedure. When it is necessary to do so, your endodontist will carefully manipulate your periodontal tissues to gain access to a tooth’s root before performing work to stop an infection or treat an injury. Once this is done, the root and your periodontal tissues can be restored, allowing you to heal properly and have the tooth permanently protected by your dentist.
Sometimes, a tooth will experience issues with discomfort or sensitivity after a root canal procedure has already been performed. What will happen if you experience this problem? In this situation, we can recommend retreatment for the tooth. Retreatment can address an injury or bacteria that remained after an initial procedure, or it can be performed on a tooth that is injured again after earlier work.
