If you start to experience a worrying amount of tooth pain, or find yourself dealing with problems like swelling or sensitivity, it can be due to an infection. Infections will eventually occur when cavities are not treated in time. They can also be a consequence of physical trauma. Because this is an issue within the tooth structure, you have to undergo root canal therapy to address it. During a root canal, bacteria and damaged or infected tissues are carefully removed from your pulp, the tooth’s central chamber where living tissues are contained.
While a standard root canal procedure provides considerable access to the inner tooth structure, problems can occur that are out of reach of this treatment. When this is the case, you may hear from a general dentist that the only treatment option left is tooth extraction. With our digital imaging technology, we can carefully study your tooth to determine how another procedure might be able to help. An apicoectomy is a form of oral surgery where a tooth’s roots are accessed, the tip of a root is removed, and work is carefully done to address damage or decay beyond the reach of a root canal. Once the treatment is finished, a filling can replace your root end to keep your tooth safe. Through this work, we can resolve trouble with your oral health without making you go through both a tooth extraction and prosthetic dental work.
A root canal should fully address problems that you have with a tooth’s health. If new problems develop, or if they do not go away after your treatment is complete, you can visit your endodontist for retreatment. During retreatment, your pulp is carefully revealed so that we can perform an evaluation and spot any new issues with damage or decay, or address problems that were not addressed during your first procedure.
