When dental decay first forms, it can affect only a small portion of your tooth. However, as the problem worsens, more of the structure will be harmed; eventually, bacteria can access your pulp, the center of your tooth, and cause you discomfort. Since this space is where nerves and blood vessels are contained, it can be hard to ignore the painful feelings from this problem. The sooner you do something about it, the sooner you can both put an end to your discomfort and stop the potential for your health issues to worsen further.
A root canal is performed in order to fight problems within the pulp, the central chamber of the tooth. We will carefully access this space, then take care to clear away bacteria and infected tissues, before the pulp is sealed. After this work is done, you can return to your general dentist to receive a permanent restoration.
Both cavities and dental injuries can sometimes require this care. With our advanced imaging technology, we can closely study your tooth and confirm this work is necessary before moving forward with it. We can also see to it that you have the right treatment experience, even if the work must take place in a harder to reach area of your smile.
There is a limit to what we can access and treat during a root canal. If there is a need to treat problems with the roots of a tooth, we can recommend oral surgery. Through an apicoectomy, we can remove the end of a root and replace it with a filling to stop further issues. This procedure allows us to save a tooth that would otherwise have to be extracted and replaced, which means we can ultimately reduce the work you need and let you keep your complete smile.
