Common Misconceptions About Root Canal Treatment

Are you experiencing severe discomfort or a toothache? This may be caused by a serious cavity. When this happens, a filling may not be able to restore the area. Instead, your dentist may have told you that you may need root canal treatment. While endodontic therapy may seem intimidating, it can help relieve pain and recover your smile. In today’s blog, Omni Endodontics in El Paso, TX, is here to correct three assumptions people may have about root canals.

The Procedure Will Be Painful

One of the most common misconceptions that people have about root canal treatment is that it will cause more discomfort. The truth is that the pain associated with the procedure is due to the ache you may be experiencing. By removing the pulp, you may be able to feel relief from this discomfort. There are sedation options available for this treatment, so you should be comfortable during the process. As you recover for the next few days, the area may be sensitive. However, once you are healed, the area should be able to withstand pressure from chewing with little difficulty.

You Should Have The Tooth Removed Instead

While it may seem tempting to just have the aching tooth removed, this can cause more harm than good. Keeping your natural pearly whites has many benefits. It keeps your gums and jaw in good condition, allows you to chew and speak normally, and maintains your smile. If your pearly white were to be removed instead of restored, it would need to be replaced in the near future. This can be more expensive and time-consuming than having a root canal done to restore the area.

If the first treatment did not heal correctly, you may need to have it re-treated. If this has happened multiple times, your dentist may discuss removing the tooth as an option. However, this is not a common problem. Extraction is often a last-resort solution.

This Treatment Is Only Done For Severe Cavities

There are several reasons a patient may need to have this procedure done, including to restore a tooth after a severe cavity. Another reason may be a severely fractured tooth. Before placing a crown, the dentist may need to remove damaged pulp first. If you have persistent pain, swollen gums, or a loose tooth, these may also be reasons to have this therapy done. The pulp contains blood vessels and nerves, which is why the area can become sensitive. By removing some of this tissue, your discomfort can be relieved.
