Does Pain In A Tooth Mean You Need Retreatment?

When you receive a root canal and your tooth begins to hurt again in the coming months, this could mean a re-infection has occurred. Treatment is then needed to avoid tooth loss and stop pain in your smile. In today’s blog, the team at Omni Endodontics in El Paso, TX, talks about the retreatment process.

Pain Following a Root Canal

When you have a root canal procedure done and in the months to come, it begins to hurt again, this could mean there was contamination that enables decay to reform in the tooth, or that portions of infected tissue may have been left behind in the interior of the tooth or the root canals. Without retreatment, you risk worsening pain and even the loss of a tooth. But with retreatment, our team can redo the process to stop discomfort and save your tooth!

The Retreatment Process

Our team will carefully examine the tooth with digital imaging systems to assess the position and extent of your infection. We will then numb the area and may recommend sedation to ensure you are calm and comfortable as we remove the crown capping your tooth and access the eruption, removing the filling and thoroughly cleaning the interior of the tooth to ensure any and all tissues have been removed. We then add new filling to the inside of the tooth and again, cap it with a crown. If the issue occurs at the tip of the roots, we may recommend a surgical procedure to address the issue at the source.

Protecting Your Smile

Following the procedure, we can discuss ways to help protect your untreated teeth from exposure to decay and infection. You should take time to brush and floss daily, reduce the amount of sugar and starch-filled foods and drinks in your diet, and avoid tobacco products. Be sure you see your general dentist for checkups and cleanings every six months as well. This can help keep the risk of infection low. If you have pain in a tooth that persists for more than a day, or if a formally treated tooth suddenly aches, be sure to reach out to our team for treatment.
