Retreatment Helps When Your Tooth Hurts Again

When you undergo a root canal treatment, and in the months or years to come the tooth begins to hurt, then you could require retreatment. We can help stop the discomfort and preserve your smile. In today’s blog, your El Paso, TX, dentist talks about our approach to a root canal retreatment, and how we can ensure results that look good and keep your bite balanced too!

The Warning Signs of an Infection

Infection means that harmful oral bacteria has reached your inner pulp, the nerve center of your tooth. Typically, this is the result of an untreated cavity or possibly due to an injury to the tooth that compromises the outer enamel. With a root canal, we open the tooth to gently remove the tissue from within. We clean the inside of your tooth and add a special restorative filling. The last step is to cap the tooth with a crown. That completes the procedure, stopping pain and preventing your infection from threatening the stability of your smile. However! If your tooth starts to hurt following treatment this could mean a root canal was done incorrectly or that contamination has happened, allowing infection to occur again. You will need a retreatment.

The Retreatment Process

We start by taking detailed digital x-rays of your tooth, which allow us to pinpoint the position and assess the severity of your infection. We will plan the procedure in detail to ensure success and long-lasting restoration. Our team will numb the tooth and if you have dental anxiety, we could offer sedation. Once you are comfortable, we open the tooth again, removing the crown so we can again clean the interior and replace the previous filling with a new one. Finally, we will attach a custom crown to the tooth, taking time to ensure a proper fit and an attractive appearance.

Root Canal Surgery

In some cases, we may discover that the infection is actually located in the tip of the tooth root. To offer treatment, we could conduct a root-end resection, in which we open the gums near the root to remove the tip and the infected tissues, we then cap the root. If you have any questions about how we conduct a treatment or surgery to stop discomfort and even your tooth from being lost, then contact our team today. We can offer care to help to smile with confidence and avoid tooth loss.
