Physical damage can lead to internal tooth problems in several ways. One issue you have to worry about is exposure. If your enamel is cracked or broken, it can expose the inner chamber of the tooth – the pulp – to a bacterial infection. Even if there is no clear sign of damage, the impact could cause internal damage that has to be addressed. We can use advanced imaging technology, including microscopes, to identify all signs of damage affecting a tooth. With this information gathered, we can determine what must be done to make sure your issue is fully resolved.
At your endodontist’s office, you can undergo a thorough evaluation to see what condition the tooth is in before treatment. This review can tell us if a traditional root canal procedure is appropriate, or if we might need to perform oral surgery to work on a portion of the tooth that is more difficult to access. If your injury affects a tooth’s root, we may need to perform an apicoectomy, or root-end recession, to deal with the harm done.
Even if a tooth is still in place, it may be damaged so badly that there is just not a way to equip it with a dental crown. Does this mean that the tooth must be extracted? Our practice has experience providing post and cores and core buildup procedures. These services add support to a badly broken tooth, which can then allow for the placement of a crown. Providing this service can remove the need for an extraction and the placement of a dental prosthetic!
