For some patients, there may not be enough tooth structure available to support a permanent restoration, like a dental bridge or a crown. If this is the case, then a Post and Core or a Core Buildup treatment will be required in order to strengthen the tooth’s structure.

What Is A Post And Core?

This treatment is for patients whose tooth structure is inadequate for supporting a traditional restoration. It may be done after a root canal procedure. During a Post and Core, a small, metal rod is placed inside the tooth’s root canal. Protruding from the root, this rod is called a post. It is then used to hold a filling in place, adding the missing bulk and structure needed to stabilize the filling.

What Is A Core Buildup?

If a tooth does not need a post, then this procedure is performed. Patients who experience a tooth breaking off due to fracture or decay may not have enough tooth remaining to secure a crown. In order to save the tooth, we will build it up with resin materials. Once the buildup is complete, we ask that you return to your referring dentist to have a crown placed on the tooth. A crown is vital after a root canal is completed to maintain the health and longevity of your tooth.

Having The Treatment Done

As with any dental procedure, your comfort is very important to us. During your treatment, we will use a topical anesthetic to help numb the area we are working on. Then we will apply a local anesthetic, which will increase the numbness. Please let us know if you would like dental sedation, too. Once we determine that the working area is completely numb, we will begin to restore your tooth.

Why Are These Treatments Needed?

By building up a tooth, it allows for a crown to be more secure. A crown placed on a broken tooth could become compromised and damage adjacent teeth. Also, a stable crown will help you bite and chew properly, and contribute to a full smile.
