After serious damage, or a problem with a cavity that called for root canal therapy, there may be a concern that a tooth no longer has the structure necessary to hold a dental crown. To make sure the restoration can be set in place, it may be necessary to add to it so that there is more to hold it in position. We can perform an evaluation to determine if this might help you save the tooth, or we can discuss it as part of a larger treatment to address a tooth in poor health that requires endodontic treatment or retreatment.
While a post and core treatment includes the placement of a metal post after root canal therapy, a core buildup will add to the structure of a tooth that does not require the placement of a post to help support a restoration. The goal in these procedures is to make sure that a crown has enough material to stay secure. Before we send you back to your regular dentist to receive this appliance, we can make sure that the work you receive gives your tooth more than enough support to allow you to rely on it when you bite and chew.
Endodontic procedures can save teeth that are at risk of being extracted. If you want to determine if a vulnerable tooth can still be saved, you can set up a consultation to discuss the tooth with us! We rely on modern imaging tools, including microscopes, to carefully evaluate teeth that are in poor condition. The right procedure can allow you to keep your smile intact without having to receive a prosthetic appliance!
