Restrengthen Your Smile With A Post And Core Buildup

If you have lost a permanent tooth, your dentist may have recommended that you receive a replacement in the form of a bridge or crown. This prosthetic can fill the gap in your smile but must be held in place by the surrounding teeth. To improve the strength of the supporting teeth, a post and core buildup may be a necessary preliminary treatment. In today’s blog, Omni Endodontics in El Paso, TX, will explain how this process works.

When Is This Needed

This form of endodontics is necessary for patients who have lost a significant amount of their natural teeth. In many instances, this procedure is performed after root canal therapy (RCT). During RCT, the damaged part of the pulp must be removed. If this is a large amount, it can make the tooth less stable. Instead of needing the tooth to be extracted, we can use this to add to the area and prepare for a restoration.

A post and core buildup may also be performed before receiving a crown or bridge. A bridge needs to have a stable surrounding structure to remain in place. If the adjacent teeth are not strong enough, this prosthetic cannot be used.

Why Not Remove The Tooth

Your dentist will perform necessary restorations in order to keep your pearly whites. Although there are prosthetics available to fill gaps in your smile, having your natural dentition has several benefits. One major factor is this will save you money down the line. Replacing your pearly whites can be costly and time-consuming. Each of your teeth has its specific functions, and missing these even for a short time before replacing them can change your ability to speak, chew, and smile.

Our teeth also keep our jawbone and gums strong, too. If you have an extraction instead of attempting to restrengthen the structure, it could lead to the tissue receding. In advanced cases, this may lead to losing more teeth. Your jaw can also weaken over time if you do not have all of your pearly whites in proper placement.

How The Treatment Works

Before beginning this procedure, the area will be numbed for your comfort. Then, the treatment can begin. In some cases, you may only need both a post and core buildup, or only the core. If you need a post, the space will be created in your tooth using a drill. Once this space is created, a metal rod will be inserted into it. This will be used to hold a filling in place. For patients needing only the core buildup, we will use composite resin to create more structure on the tooth. This is beneficial for patients who will later need a crown placed.
