When You Have A Tooth Infection

Damage to your pearly white could lead to severe problems if not treated in time. Whether you have a chipped or cracked tooth or have an untreated cavity, you may be at risk of an infection. At Omni Endodontics in El Paso, TX, we know how stressful and uncomfortable this can be. We offer root canal therapy and other treatments that can help save your smile.

What Causes Infections

When bacteria enter the tooth, it can create an infection. This often happens if a broken tooth is not repaired, or you delay getting a filling. People who use tobacco, have poor oral hygiene, or a heavy sugar diet are at a higher risk of infection.

If you begin to feel pain in your mouth, swelling, or sensitivity, you may have an abscess. It is important to have this examined and cared for swiftly before the symptoms worsen.

Ignoring Signs Of An Infection

The side effects of an abscess will be hard to ignore. However, if you delay seeing your dentist, they will continue to progress. If the tooth is decayed and causes an abscess, there is a risk of losing the entire structure. The bacteria from this problem can also enter the body and cause other health issues. In severe cases, patients may feel fatigued, dizzy, and even experience stomach pains.

How A Root Canal Can Help

Before your injury reaches this stage, you should see a dentist for proper care. In many cases, a broken or injured tooth can be repaired with a dental crown. This is a tooth-shaped cap that will cover the entire piece. It will help restrengthen and repair the damage, as well as protect it from bacteria entering the wound.

Cavities can be repaired with dental fillings. During this process, the decayed piece is removed, the area is cleaned, and a material is used to seal the remaining hole. This keeps bacteria out and protects against infection. However, if you are unable to get the cavity filled in time, a root canal can treat the area. If your tooth is not strong enough to support a root canal, a post and core buildup may be performed.

Although this treatment seems intimidating, it can actually relieve your symptoms effectively. The mouth will be numbed for your comfort, and then the endodontist will remove the decayed pulp. When the pulp becomes inflamed, it can cause severe discomfort. Once this is taken out, patients experience near-immediate relief. Then the area is cleaned, and a crown may be placed over top. Similar to receiving a crown on an injured tooth, this is used to protect the surface from further damage.
