Treating Infected Teeth With Post And Core

We offer an array of endodontic treatments to address teeth that have become infected, so you avoid discomfort and tooth loss. In many cases, this involves attaching a crown to the tooth following treatment. But if your tooth is too weak for a crown, you may need a little structural improvement. In today’s blog, your Omni Endodontics team in El Paso, TX, can help with post and core!

When to See Us for Treatment

When should you see us for treatment? People with an infected tooth may encounter persistent tooth sensitivity and toothaches in the early stages, but this could progress to pain in the jaw and face, discomfort when you bite down or chew, swelling near the tooth, headaches, and even a discharge from the tooth itself. The infection means harmful oral bacteria has reached the pulp, the nerve center of your tooth, and lack of treatment could mean the loss of your tooth and the spread of infection! We can help with a root canal procedure, but if your tooth structure cannot support a crown, we may need to conduct Post and Core treatment.

Post and Core Treatment

The root canal involves our team numb your tooth and if needed, offering sedation, before we open the tooth to remove the infected tissues. We clean the inside of the tooth, add a special filling, and then cap the tooth with a custom crown to protect it and restore function and beauty to your smile. But! In some cases, there may not be enough structure to support a crown due to the severity of the infection or other factors.

We may add a post to the interior of the tooth, which holds a filling in place and provides structure to connect a crown and complete the treatment. If a post isn’t the right option, we could add a core, a special material applied to the interior of the tooth to make crown placement possible. The treatment then restores your tooth and allows you to eat your favorite foods and enjoy a full and healthy smile, one that looks good too.

Protecting Your Smile

Following treatment, you can take action to reduce the risk of future infections! For example, make time to brush and floss properly, and cut back on the amount of sugar and starch in your diet. Be sure you’re receiving dental cleanings every few months too. These actions help keep decay and infection at bay! If you play sports, be sure you wear a mouthguard too.
