Securing Your Root Canal With Post And Core

When a dental infection weakens your tooth and it cannot support a restoration, then you may need a unique procedure to strengthen the tooth. With Post and Core treatment, we can ensure your tooth can support root canal treatment, so your team at Omni Endodontics in El Paso, TX, can treat infection and prevent painful symptoms and tooth loss!

Infection and Weakened Tooth Structure

A tooth becomes infected when harmful oral bacteria reach the pulp, which is a collection of tissues at the center of your tooth. This could happen when a cavity remains untreated or following an injury to the tooth. The infection could eventually kill the pulp and allow the tooth to die, so extraction is needed to prevent the spread of infection to other parts of your smile. But with a root canal treatment, we can treat and save the tooth. When you experience painful symptoms like tooth sensitivity, toothaches, swelling near the tooth, pain in the face or jaw, or a discharge from the tooth, let us know right away.

Post and Core

Our team will carefully examine the tooth with digital x-rays to assess the position and severity of the infection. With a traditional root canal, we numb the tooth and then open it to remove the tissues from within. We clean the interior of the tooth and add a special restorative filling material. The last step is to cap it with a crown. But if your tooth structure is too weak to support a crown, we could insert a small metal rod into the interior of the tooth. The filling is added around the rod to support the tooth and make receiving a crown possible. A core buildup is needed if the tooth is damaged and can’t support repair with a restoration. Instead of the traditional filling material, we build up the interior with a unique resin, which is very durable and strong.

Safeguarding Your Smile

Following treatment, you can make changes to your daily routine to make the risk of tooth decay and infection much lower, so you may not need endodontic care down the road. We suggest brushing and flossing daily to remove stray food and drink particles and limit plaque buildup, and seeing your general dentist for a checkup and cleaning every six months. A healthy diet is helpful too! If you have any questions about how we help compromised teeth with a post and core treatment, or a core buildup, then contact our team today.
