Teeth-whitening is a popular cosmetic treatment for dental patients desiring to remove stains from their teeth. You can often have it done in a single visit to a dentist’s office or, if you have time, at home with teeth-whitening trays. However, some patients have a “dead” tooth that no amount of teeth-whitening will help. This can happen due to structural issues in the tooth or if fluids entered during a root canal procedure. Whatever the cause, there is an opportunity to restore it to match nearby teeth through a process called internal bleaching.
What Is Internal Bleaching?
Internal bleaching describes the process of whitening a tooth from the inside out. Traditional bleaching addresses the outside of teeth. Internal bleaching is a safe treatment.
How Is It Done?
When you make an appointment with us for internal bleaching, we will examine the tooth and take x-rays to evaluate its discoloration. Once that is completed, we will then insert a special bleaching agent into the pulp chamber and seal it with a temporary filling. It will react with and dissolve any stains, helping your tooth appear whiter. The procedure may take place over several days until proper whitening is achieved.
Caring For Your Teeth After The Treatment
Just as with traditional teeth whitening treatments, internal bleaching is effective but not permanent. To help prolong the color and to prevent staining, limit foods or drinks that may cause discoloration. These include red wine, coffee, and tea. You will also want to stop smoking and using tobacco products, if you currently do so. Finally, brushing twice a day for at least two minutes each time with a fluoride-based toothpaste, flossing daily, and scheduling regular checkups and cleanings with your dentist will help you maintain good oral health and keep your smile bright and shining.
