el paso summer break

Summer time is almost here, and for kids and adults the change in season and the time off of school could make changes to your routine, and for some, a higher risk of tooth decay and infection. Which is why we want to offer a few tips for protecting your smiles all summer long! In today’s blog, Omni Endo talks about preventing infection in El Paso, TX.

Summer Break and Dental Infection

A dental infection means that harmful oral bacteria have reached the tooth’s nerve center, the group of tissues at the center of it known as the pulp. This could occur due to an injury to the tooth, such as one that can occur when playing sports without a mouthguard. This could also occur due to a cavity that remains untreated. Tooth decay could occur when kids snack more on sugary foods and drinks and don’t brush and floss as they usually do, as summertime can mean interruptions to their routine. Making sure they maintain good oral hygiene and take certain precautions to help limit the risk of discomfort and the need for a root canal!

Preventive Actions

If your children play sports, practice martial arts, or box, make sure they were a mouthguard to protect their teeth from injuries. This also limits the chances of damaged orthodontics and even the risk of concussions. You can buy one from any sporting goods store, or you can talk to your general dentist about a custom option, which could provide a greater level of protection. Make sure your kids don’t overdo it on sugar, limit their access to candy, chips, and sodas and energy drinks. Remember, too many sports drinks and even fruit juices can expose teeth to lots of sugars and acids. Make sure they brush and floss daily too! Even when on the road for a vacation, they need to brush twice a day for two minutes with a fluoride toothpaste, and also floss every evening before bed.

When to Seek a Root Canal

If they begin to experience pain in a tooth that is severe and prolonged, then let us know. We will examine the tooth with digital imaging technology and if we find infection, we can plan a safe and gentle root canal to stop the pain and protect the smile from tooth loss. We can even offer retreatment if you or your child has had a root canal at another office and the tooth begins to hurt again.
