When you have a tooth that receives a root canal and begins to hurt again in the weeks and months to come, this could mean the need for retreatment. Our team can offer endodontic care to help ease discomfort and preserve your smile! In today’s blog, Omni Endo in El Paso, TX, talks about helping smiles with root canal retreatment.
The Need for a Tooth’s Retreatment
When do you need to seek retreatment? If you have a tooth treated for an infection at another practice months or years before and the tooth begins to hurt again, this could mean the infection has returned. This could occur if the tooth’s interior was contaminated during treatment or if the crown was not placed correctly, allowing bacteria to enter the inside of the tooth. Possibly, a piece of the interior tissues was left behind and became inflamed. Regardless of the cause, when you have pain in your tooth you need help, and we can offer assistance with a retreatment, saving your tooth from being lost and preventing the risk of spreading infection.
Addressing Your Smile
The process is similar to a root canal. We will numb your tooth to ensure your comfort as we remove the crown and open the tooth, taking out the previously placed materials as needed and thoroughly cleaning it to remove bacteria and any remaining tissues. After we thoroughly clean it, we add a new filling and again cap the tooth with a crown. If the infection has resurfaced at the tips of the roots, we may need to offer endodontic surgery for more effective and direct treatment.
Root Canal Surgery
With endodontic surgery, we will be able to target the root tips directly for a more effective treatment. Instead of moving down the root canals from the side of the tooth, we will numb the gums near where the roots are located and open them to access the tips directly. We then open the root tip and remove the tissues, adding a filling material to seal the root.
With all of these treatments, we take time to ensure you are comfortable and relaxed, and can offer sedation along with local anesthetic to ensure even those with anxiety or special needs enjoy a positive experience, one done with comfort and precision. We even plan every step with the latest advanced digital imaging too!
