When a tooth is infected, we can offer relief with a root canal to stop the discomfort and keep your smile from losing a tooth. But if the infection is severe enough to leave little structure to support a crown, we could offer an alternative. In today’s blog, your El Paso, TX, endodontic experts talk about the post and core buildup.
The Presence of a Dental Infection
When you have a painful toothache that doesn’t subside after a day or two, or if you have pain during meals, swelling, a discharge from the tooth, or aches in the face or jaw, you should let us know. These are all common symptoms of an infected tooth, and without treatment you risk the loss of your tooth and the spread of infection. With a traditional root canal, we will remove the infected tissues and replace them with a filling material. We then cap the tooth with a custom dental crown. But what if there isn’t enough structure to support a crown? We may need to offer a root canal with a post and core buildup!
The Post and Core Buildup
If you don’t have the adequate tooth structure to support a crown, then we could add a small metal rod to the interior of the tooth, which can then fold the filling material in place and ensure your tooth can support the crown portion of the procedure.
If portions of the tooth have been broken due to injury or fracture, then we may need to build up the interior of the tooth. With a core buildup, we do so with a special resin material, which is durable and strong. This ensures we can place a crown to complete the root canal, so you can smile with confidence and enjoy your favorite foods again.
