When you have a dental infection, this could be a source of serious discomfort and even risk the loss of your tooth. But we can help prevent this with a root canal procedure, using advanced technology to plan the process. In today’s blog, your Omni Endodontics team in El Paso, TX, talks about digital x-rays and CBCT technology and how we use these to ensure treatment with precision.
When to Seek Treatment
Let’s talk about when you need to seek endodontic treatment. If you have persistent pain in a tooth, or aches that have spread to the face and jaw, then you should see us right away. This could mean advanced cases of tooth decay or infection, and treatment is crucial to prevent the loss of your tooth and the spread of infection to other parts of your smile. You may be referred to us by your general dentist, or again, if you have prolonged discomfort, we can offer a diagnosis to see if you benefit from a root canal or a retreatment if you had one before and pain has returned to the tooth.
Digital X-Rays
We want to plan the treatment in detail to ensure optimal results and avoid the risk of complications down the road. To get started, we will take digital x-ray images of your smile. You place your chin on a special rest, and a machine will encircle your head to capture incredibly detailed images of your smile as a whole. No need for uncomfortable bitewings, and no need to wait for the images to develop in harsh chemicals. Instead, these high-definition images are available chairside, so we can walk you through the diagnosis and limit how long you’re waiting in the chair. This technology also uses 80% less radiation!
CBCT Imaging
Our team can also obtain cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images. These provide detailed 3D digital images of your entire smile and oral structures, so we can make a diagnosis with precision and plan more advanced treatments, such as root canal surgery, also known as apicoectomy. We can see your smile from multiple angles, so your care is planned with greater accuracy. Again, this uses less radiation and the images are available instantly chairside.
What Happens Next?
After we analyze these images, we will then decide on the best course of treatment. For many, this is a root canal to remove the infected tissues from within your tooth, or apicoectomy if the infection is in the tip of a root canal. If you have treatment previously at another office and reinfection occurs, we can complete the treatment right and stop discomfort.
