Should you have an infected tooth, this could mean you need treatment with a root canal. But what if you don’t have enough tooth structure to adequately support a crown? In these situations, you may need a little more than a traditional root canal. In today’s blog, your El Paso, TX, dentist talks about the post and core buildup.
The Importance of Treating Infection
A dental infection is a serious cause for concern, and an issue that you want to address quickly. A tooth becomes infected when harmful oral bacteria make contact with the pulp, the nerve center of your tooth. This is possible due to advanced tooth decay, or even an injury to the tooth. Without treatment, the infection could cause the spread of infection and even tooth loss. With a traditional root canal, we numb the tooth and open it so we can remove the tissues from within. We then clean the side of your tooth and replace the tissues with a special restorative filling. The last step is to polish the tooth. But sometimes, there is not enough adequate structure to support the crown, and a post and core could be needed.
When a Post and Core is Needed
With a post and core treatment, after our team removes the tissues from within the tooth and clean the interior, we will add a small metal rod to the inside. The rod extends from the root canal to the interior of the tooth, and is used to hold the filling material in place and help better support the crown we place. We could also conduct a core buildup, in which we use a special resin material to build up the interior of the tooth to ensure it can support the crown and remain stable afterward.
