If you develop a dental infection, this could weaken your tooth to the point that it may not be able to support restoration. As part of the treatment, we could strengthen the tooth’s interior! In today’s blog, Omni Endo in El Paso, TX, talks about how we strengthen infected teeth with a post and core buildup.
The Signs of an Infected Tooth
An infection means that dangerous oral bacteria have reached the pulp, the nerve center of your tot located at the center and in the root canals. This exposure could be due to an injury to the tooth or advanced tooth decay. You may experience swelling, toothaches and sensitivity when you talk or eat, and pain in the face or jaw. Headaches could occur, and you may even notice a discharge from the tooth itself. When this happens, you need treatment with a root canal, or possibly an apicoectomy. Otherwise, the tooth could be lost, which causes more severe complications for your smile’s health, function, and beauty.
Post and Core Buildup
A traditional root canal is pretty straight forward. We plan treatment with digital imaging, open the tooth to remove the interior tissues, and replace them with a special filling. We then cap the tooth with a crown. But! If the interior of the tooth has been weakened to the point it can no longer support a crown, then we may need to better strengthen the inside. We could provide a post that can support the interior filling. We could further build up the inside with a post and a core too. A core could also be used on its own to help strengthen the interior of the tooth and ensure it can handle a restoration. These fill the inside and provide structure to support filling materials and a crown, so your tooth stays in place and you avoid the need for retreatment down the road.
Avoiding Dental Infection
We always talk to our patients about ways to avoid tooth decay and infection, limiting the chances a root canal is necessary down the road. You can help protect your smile with daily brushing and flossing, a diet low in sugar, and by avoiding tobacco products. You should see your general dentist for a checkup and cleaning every six months too, and wear a mouthguard when playing sports to prevent injuries. These factors can limit the risk of cavities and even infection!
