el paso post and core

When you have a dental infection, a root canal is often the right choice to repair the tooth and keep your smile whole. But if the tooth is severely infected or injured, then there may not be enough structure to support a root canal. Which is why your El Paso, TX, endodontist may recommend a post and core treatment!

When Teeth Need Treatment

A dental infection means that harmful oral bacteria have reached the pulp, the nerve center of your tooth. For many, this is the result of an untreated cavity that has grown in severity, or due to an injury to the tooth that has exposed the interior to harmful bacteria. You may begin to experience tooth sensitivity, toothaches, and later pin when you bite down or chew. There could be jaw and facial aches, and also swelling near the tooth or even a discharge from it. When you begin to experience symptoms like these, you may need endodontic treatment, such as a root canal. However, if the tooth is too weak to support a traditional one, we could strengthen the interior with post and core.

The Post and Core Process

With the post portion, we will essentially insert a small rod into the interior of the tooth. This rod allows us to add the necessary filling to the inside of the tooth, which stabilizes the area so your tooth can support a crown and remain strong and able to handle daily bite forces. With the core, if there is not enough structure to support a filling or crown, we could use composite resin to build up the tooth, providing enough support to secure a crown in place and complete your root canal procedure.

Managing Your Comfort

We always take the comfort of our patients into account. We want everyone, even those with dental anxiety, to enjoy a positive experience in our office. Our team can provide a local anesthetic to numb the area being treated. For those with anxiety or special needs, we could use sedation to help them enter a deep state of calm and relaxation, often with little to no memory of the procedure afterward. We only start the root canal process once you are comfortable and ready, so your treatment experience is a positive one.
